Costa Rica is the bridge between two oceans so it’s contrasting coastlines make it epic for surfing. From the palm-fringed Pacific to the tropical Caribbean you’ll find a wave to suit your surfing ability. Head to Playa Avenella along the Nicoya Peninsula for gentler waves if you’re not too confident on your board or to Nosara for some awesome Pacific surf if you’re more of a pro.
Thousands of endangered turtles use the beaches of Costa Rica, as vital nesting grounds for their precious eggs. If you want a hands on experience join the Pacific sea turtle project on Matapalo Beach, these volunteers are battling hard to protect the endangered turtle hatchlings. You’ll be on full time babysitting duty!
Coffee is Costa Rica’s most famous export and foundation of the country’s prosperity. As you travel across the country you’ll spot the green and brown coffee fields as they patchwork across the hillside. Take a tour around a coffee plantation, learn how the coffee bean makes it from plantation to cup. Definitely join a professional coffee-tasting session known as “cupping” or head to Café Naranjo for the best coffee in Costa Rica – you won’t be going back to Starbucks in a hurry!
What better way to truly immerse yourself into Costa Rica’s diverse wildlife than zip-lining! Feel the wind wooshing in your hair as you zoom through Monteverde Cloud Forest at 40km an hour, you’ll get a bird’s eye view of the jungle and swing amongst the tree canopies – keep those eyes peeled for sloths.
The Arenal volcano was the most active volcano in Costa Rica until 2010. Its perfect cone is visible from almost anywhere in the area! Take the Los Tucanes trail to the Arenal Observatory lodge, for the best view of the volcano. After a long trek through the jungle you’ll definitely want to relax in the nearby volcanic hot springs. You can soak and unwind in a nature’s hot tub!
Sloths are one of the most iconic animals found in Costa Rica. They can be spotted throughout the year, but rainy season is better than dry as the trees and flora are flourishing during this time. If you want 100% guarantee that you’ll see a sloth, then check out the Limon Sloth Sanctuary. You can visit rescued and rehabilitated sloths for a small admission fee of $30 and do your bit to help the world’s most chilled animal! How could you resist that smile?
