Community projects
When something is fundamentally right it just works. There are no handouts to be had and all these community projects are established in partnership with local people. Running a business in Africa is hard work and with it comes tough decisions. The process invariably starts with a long hot meeting in the village with the Chief and Elders to discuss the needs of the community and how sustainable development objectives can be achieved by working together.
The Camps act as a source of local industry and employment with food produce and project materials bought locally. We bring the funds, enthusiastic travellers and sustainability.
During your stay, you will become involved with projects ranging from low-level construction to making elephant dung paper. We have to balance the needs of the project with our need to ensure that your experience is both fulfilling and fun, but can assure you of an incredible experience.
Wildlife projects
East Africa is home to more than one-quarter of Africa’s wild animals and host to the most famous safari experiences on Earth as well as being known as the birthplace of mankind. The Masai Mara, Tsavo, Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater are places that everyone should visit at some stage in life.
The word ‘safari’ is Swahili for journey and a safari is included in every experience. People travel for many reasons, but one shared pleasure is to spend several exhilarating days in the wilderness, watching animals in their natural habitat.
For the volunteer programmes, there is a range of wildlife conservation projects that provide you with a working safari experience ranging from marine animals to primates to elephants, as well as being able to enjoy a safari for pleasure.
It’s a rare experience to sit in a vehicle in the middle of the African bush with the engine turned off and cool box primed, just waiting to see what comes along. It’s about as good as it gets in our humble opinion.
Pre-bookable adventure add ons:
Scuba Diving – Kenya
Qualify with PADI from open water certificates to rescue diver packages.
Courses last between 3 to 7 days depending on the package and start at £260.
The reefs along the Kenya coast are extremely diverse and all standards of diving can be found to suit even the most meticulous diver. Visibility is generally good although it can change on a daily basis and the quality and diversity of marine life is quite simply incredible. Sightings of whale sharks, manta rays and other large pelagics occur on a regular basis, and smaller creatures such as nudibranchs can also be seen on the well-formed coral reefs.
Kite Surfing – Kenya
Add to your Camp Kenya adventure with an introduction to one of the newest, fastest growing, exciting and most fun water sports in the world.
Learner courses last between 2 to 3 days and start at £175.
The Kenya coast is undeniably one of the best places in the world to learn to kiteboard. Shallow, warm, reef-protected water; perfect side-shore winds and lots of super wide beach to make your learning experience fantastic!
The friendly instructors will make sure your experience is both fun and safe. It typically takes a few days to teach you the basics and get you up and riding across the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. It’s not as hard as it looks but definitely as cool as it looks!!
Mountain Trekking – Mount Kenya 7 day/6 night trip
Challenge yourself to climb Kenya’s highest peak and experience the exhilaration of trekking the second highest mountain in Africa. As the highest mountain in Kenya at 4985 meters and second only to Kilimanjaro in Africa, this is an amazing 5 day trek. Enjoy the stunning views of Kenya's Rift Valley and experience the physical and mental challenge of trekking Kenya's highest mountain with 2 nights in a comfortable Kenyan Lodge before and after the climb.
Treks are £420.
NB The summit of Point Lenana is 4985 metres and you will be walking purposefully slow to acclimatise to the altitude. Mount Kenya is quite a unique mountain, known for its steep faces and rapidly rising altitude. If you are a regular walker and are moderately fit, there should be no problems in the ascent and a regular routine of jogging, cycling or walking three times a week will help with your fitness.
Mountain Trekking – Kilimanjaro
Kilimanjaro is the highest free-standing volcano in the world and the tallest mountain in Africa. At an altitude of 5895 metres it presents a formidable challenge to all who attempt to climb it. This 7-day trek provides an extremely fulfilling personal challenge for all ages and an opportunity to escape normal life and experience one of the wonders of the world. Inlcudes 2 nights at a very comfortable Tanzanian hotel, before and after the trek to both prepare and celebrate.
Treks from £950.
