Live like a local

Get under the skin of the country you visit and really feel what it is like to live there.  STA Travel, the experts in budget and youth travel, have three ways to live like a local.

Live With Your Teacher

Learn a language and live like a local on an unusual language course.  Rather than sitting in a classroom and being led through a textbook, you live in the home of your teacher in Rio de Janeiro so you can become  immersed in the language and culture of the country.

As well as learning Portuguese in everyday situations, you will get 20 hours of formal lessons per week from your highly qualified teacher and host.  The course includes all meals, accommodation and includes at least one outing with your teacher.  Seven days cost from £643 per person. Flights to Rio with TAM cost from £499 per person.  Book with STA Travel; http://www.statravel.co.uk or call 0871 230 8512.

Work in a Chinese Museum

Volunteer at the world famous Han Yangling  Musuem, near Xian and get a rare opportunity to work at the home of one of China’s national treasures.  The museum, with its underground exhibition halls,  is situated an hour outside Xian at the tomb of Jung Di, the fourth emperor of the Han Dynasty.   Volunteers will also get the chance to work at the Terracotta Warriors museum.

The museum is looking for volunteers to raise the language skills of the museum’s staff and improve the museum’s offerings to English-speaking visitors.  Two weeks volunteering at the museum costs from £1,015 per person, including accommodation in a shared room in a volunteer house and two meals a day.  Flights to Xian cost from £499 with China Southern Airlines.  Book with STA Travel; http://www.statravel.co.uk or call 0871 230 8512.

Live in the Bush

See what it is like living in the Australian Bush, by volunteering at a Wallaby rehabilitation centre in Queensland.  The centre is set in a very rural location, about an hour from the nearest town and will give volunteers a true taste of bush life.  TheBridled Nailtail Wallaby is one of the world’s most endangered species and volunteers will help to care for the remaining 130 wallabies at this care facility.

Volunteers help with preparing the wallabies' food, cleaning enclosures  and conducting health checks.  While working at the rehabilitation centre, volunteers live at a local farm.  Two weeks at the Wallaby Rehabilitation centre costs from £675.75 per person, including accommodation and meals. Flights to Rockhampton cost from £815 with Qantas. Book with STA Travel; http://www.statravel.co.uk or call 0871 230 8512.
