Accommodation FAQ

Barcelona, Spain

Q. What’s a hostel?

A. Hostels are communal accommodations geared toward backpackers and those travelers who want to stretch their travel dollar. Accommodation is usually dormitory style with anywhere from 4 to 40 beds in a room. Dormitory rooms are sometimes separated by gender, but some hostels mix genders in the same room. Bathrooms and showers may be shared among several rooms. Some hostels offer private rooms in addition to dormitory rooms. Many hostels offer additional amenities such as a communal kitchen, lockers or baggage storage, internet, TV lounge, or a tour desk.

Q. How many people can fit into a room?

A. Single rooms sleep one person. Twin or double rooms sleep two people (twin rooms have two twin beds, and double rooms have one double bed). Triple rooms sleep three people. Quad rooms sleep four people.

Q. Are all these hotels the same as they are in the US?

A. Hotels are as varied as the cultures you visit. In most other parts of the world, rooms and beds are smaller than they are in the US. Be prepared for differences in accommodation--if you are looking for a hotel with all the comforts of an American-style hotel, book at least a 3-globe hotel. See our hotel ratings guidelines for full details.

Q. What does "without bathroom" mean?

A. "Without bathroom" means that you will have shared facilities--these are bathrooms and showers shared by more than one room. Usually there will be several large bathrooms and showers on each floor.

Q. What is a travelpass? How do I find one?

A. A travelpass is a bus or train pass that you can use to get around a city or country for a specified period of time. Usually, a travelpass is a flexible pass (not a tour) that allows you to plan as you go but will not include seat reservations. You may need to make and confirm reservations as you go for each day you travel, and reservations may not be included in the pass price. Choose the "Tours, Transfers & Passes" tab on the search screen menu bar.

Q. What is a tour? How do I find one?

A. A tour is a guided sightseeing excursion lasting from one to several days, such as a city tour, a bar crawl, or a bungy jump. A tour usually does not include your accommodations. Choose the "Tours, Transfers & Passes" tab on the search screen menu bar.

Q. What is a transfer? How can I find one?

A. A transfer is transportation to or from an airport or bus/boat terminal to the downtown area or accommodation of your choice. Transfers can be private or shared with other travelers. Pre-book a transfer to ease transportation between locations while traveling. Choose the "Tours, Transfers & Passes" tab on the search screen menu bar.
