Teach a Language - Chile

With this program, you will work jointly with a Chilean English Teacher in the public school system, teaching classes consisting of about 25 students for 45-minute periods. You can expect to have approximately 25 hours of class time and work an additional 10 hours on lesson plans and extracurricular activities per week. Extracurricular activities may include developing English conversation groups, dance classes, art projects, English fairs, and encouraging school community participation. You may also work with interested teachers to develop their oral proficiency and/or to design materials or activities for use in English classrooms.

• Locations: Antofagasta, Calama, Mejillones, Socaire, Peine and San Pedro de Atacama

• Accommodations: You will be provided with host family and will be placed near your school.

• Language Requirement: English as your first language and basic level of Spanish.

Program Details

ORIENTATION

You will have two weeks of orientation training in Santiago and one week in Antofagasta before you begin your teaching assignments. Orientation training will review: Chilean education system and school visits, Chilean culture, Teaching English as a Foreign Language training (TEFL), and a Spanish language course. We will also arrange for recreational activities and cultural events. During orientation you will be provided with accommodations, food, and transportation.

ELIGIBILITY

  • 21 - 40 years old
  • Native English speaker
  • Basic level of Spanish
  • Hold an undergraduate degree
  • Previous experience teaching, working with children and/or traveling is not required but helpful

LOCATION
In the north of Chile in the Atacama Desert area. This region offers volunteers a variety of locations and varying teaching and living situations. Antofagasta is an urban coastal city of 400,000, Calama is a small semi-urban inland city, Mejillones is a small fishing town, and San Pedro de Atacama and Peine are rural pueblos.

ACCOMMODATION
You will be provided with host family accommodations and meals, and will be placed near your school.

PROGRAM FEES

6 months - US $1,250 (prices subject to change and do not include airfare, visa fees and personal expenses)

SALARY
US $150 / month

IN-COUNTRY TRANSPORTATION
You will be provided with round-trip bus transportation from Santiago to your teaching site.

VISA DOCUMENTATION
We will assist you in obtaining a temporary residence visa.
