A to Z: Basic Info
Round The World ticket
A Round the World Ticket is an airfare that allows you to travel on different routes with a group of airlines, as long as it’s within the rules and regulations of the fare (mainly that you must cross the Atlantic and Pacific oceans at some stage on your journey).
In addition to the Round the World fares that all travel agents have access to, STA Travel has specially-negotiated deals that allow greater flexibility as well as more mileage for your dollar.
Value-for-money
This is the main advantage of a Round the World ticket. It provides a huge range of destinations that can be added to your trip compared to a straight fare that will only get you from A to B.
Airline Alliances
The "group" of airlines mentioned above is an alliance. Most of the major airlines belong to one of two alliances, oneworld or Star Alliance. The member airlines of these alliances work together to get you where you want to go for your Round the World itinerary!
oneworld:
- comprised of: American, BA, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, LAN, Malev, Qantas and Royal Jordanian.
- more than 675 destinations worldwide
Star Alliance:
- comprised of: USAirways, Air Canada, United, South African Airways, SAS, bmi, Lufthansa, LOT, TapPortugal, Spanair, Swiss, Austrian, Turkish Airlines, ANA, Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, Thai, Shanghai Airlines, Asiana Airlines as well as regional carriers in Europe.
- 965 destinations in 162 countries.
Low season
Traditionally, this refers to the cheapest time to depart. Fares are based on the departure date and are not affected by subsequent flights. So if you have some flexibility, plan around your ideal time to visit the ‘hot spots’ on your list – arriving a week or two earlier (or later) might just save you a few hundred dollars!
High Season
High Season, as we call it, is the most popular time to travel and therefore the most expensive. The price difference is generally dictated by seasons (i.e. the Northern Hemisphere summer or Christmas time) and there can be a $200 - $500 variance, depending on the fare that’s chosen. The seasonality of a Round the World fare is only based on departure date and is not affected by subsequent flights.
Mileage
Rules pertaining to mileage are probably the most restrictive rules that apply to a Round the World airfare.
STA Travel Advisors calculate their prices on different mileage levels, with the price increasing as your mileage level goes up (the further you fly, the higher your mileage). The number of stops are also restricted, however you will find most of the time that mileage is more restrictive than the maximum number of stops. Keep this in mind when planning your trip.
The amount of time you can spend at each destination is not usually an issue as most Round the World fares have a 12-month validity on the entire journey. However, STA Travel has broken new ground by negotiating 18-month validity on certain exclusive Round the World airfares.
