Royal Hotel Bangkok Dec 09

The pool. Generally I was disappointed with the hotel. Staff were anything BUT friendly or helpful. The breakfast, inccluded in the room charge, was terrible, and finished too early. The room smelt like stale cigarette smoke, and had a balcony door which did not lock. Customers should also be made aware of the hotels requirement for a CASH deposit on check in. Luckily I had just enough cash on me, but considering I checked in after mid-night, I would have been extremely inconvenienced if I had been made to go out in search of an ATM on my first night in Bangkok, straight off my flight. Generally, it was sufficient, but would not recommend this place to anyone.

Poor service and rude staff

Our overall trip was great, however the staff at the Royal Hotel did disappoint. We needed an extra night but didn't need breakfast as we had a very early flight to Phuket the next day and breakfast wouldn't be ready then. We got told it would cost us 1500BHT for two people with no breakfast and we could pay that when we check out, with which we were happy. Upon checkout at 5:20am we were told to pay 1800BHT because apparently it was written down that we booked the night with breakfast included. We told the lady at the front desk that there must of been a mistake and we clearly didn't ask for breakfast as we were aware of our early checkout. She refused and said we must pay. We asked to speak to the manager and we pointed out that breakfast wasn't even ready yet (as it gets served at 6:30am and it was only 5:20am) and we weren't going to eat it. He became very rude and said that if we didn't pay 300BHT extra he will call the police. We had no choice but to pay. It was very disappointing and annoying as we clearly asked for no breakfast and were clearly not going to get breakfast but still were forced to pay. Outside the hotel there are at least 10 taxi drivers every minute of the day who hassled and harassed people and tried to rip people off by offering over priced rides. There are also many tuk-tuk drivers who are trying to sell you "cheap 2 hour tour", but really take you for a ride to tailors and gem shops. On our first afternoon in Bangkok all the taxi drivers outside the hotel refused to give us a ride to the MBK with a meter, and became quite rude so I asked the hotel staff to help and they simply told me to go down the road and try catching a taxi there. I will admit that the rooms are big and clean but maybe this hotel should be recommended to experienced travellers or people who have been to Bangkok before It is out of the way if people are interested in shopping and we have been refused rides many many times to and from the hotel, as taxi drivers claim its too far and try to charge you 150-300BHT (with meter ~75BHT).

The location being within a short distance to the markets and shopping centres was great. Having Khaosan Road around the corner was great for nightlife.

The place was relatively central, although you have to walk through a giant intersection the moment you go outside to get anywhere. Good if you are only staying a night or two, but not for an extended stay. Noisy on the road side units and dark everywhere as there are not enough light sockets. Pool closes early.
