The 'Real' Chiang Mai

I am 18 years old and had never travelled this far with only one friend before. For our first 2 nights in Thailand, it was the perfect place to stay as it was comfortable and in a remote area and it was a great place for us to get a good nights sleep and get rid of the jet lag! However, once we moved on to staying in hostels we realised that even though the quality of the accommodation was no where near as good, the atmosphere was so much better in cheaper places! Because of our age, we were happy to be around other young people so that we could make friends and also hear from fellow backpackers the experiences they've had and it was great for those sort of people to give you advice on what to do on our travels. As I said, I was very happy to stay at Centara Duangtawan for our first few nights and the location was good however, I would not recommend the hotel if you want to experience the backpacker feel and the 'real Chiang Mai'.

The outside pool area was great to relax by, had a bar next to pool and a spa area. From the pool terrace there was a great view of Chiang Mai. The hotel was really clean and had a variety of restuarants to eat in if you didn't want to venture out. Probably best suited for couples and families rather than backpackers though.

Leaving. I've back pack round Africa in £1.20 a night accommodation. This isn't even on a part because in Africa you don't get bedding so it can't be dirty (another person’s bloody snot on the valance not good). i travel round Thailand and all our other hotels were fabulous this was the only fly in the ointment. If your young and on a budget go to a hostel where you can make friends and socialize, this was one of the drabbest, most depressing atmosphere in a lively chilled and cool city. First they had no record of our reservations so check in took over an hour only because we didn’t leave straight away as they hoped but showed them our confirmation. Then at 10.30pm they showed us a room. Low ceilings, bad drain smell, mould, curtains don’t shut oh and don’t pull too hard, damaged furniture and lobby's dead, , OK not inspiring. But then I turn down the bed, mystery stains!!! And black marks on the pillow like smudged mascara, then a filthy valance, very yellow next to the sheet and all black brown and yellow stains splash across it. I went to reception and told them, which they said ‘no problem we change’ by the time I got back to our room already changing, but the new bedding which I saw come out of the dry clean packet had cigarette burns, and more suspect brown stains and black mascara smudges. They didn’t have a valance to change ours. We walked round the local hotels but all fully booked so slept in our clothes that night and decided to check our first thing. Don’t know why but we went to breakfast and the choice was mediocre at best but when you see a hair on your plate (and your already questioning the hygiene of a place) you end up doing the one thing you promised yourself you wouldn’t and running to Starbucks. But the best came last, back in the room as I bent down I noticed the bloody snot on the valance, neither of us had sneezed and we tend to use tissue to blow our noses. This may have been a 4 star in 2009 but they are still using the same bedding, (you can guess how many people have slept in them) and they haven’t maintained the fixtures or fittings or given the place a lick of paint. Just stay somewhere else so you don’t waste a day of your holiday looking for another room

The rooms themselves are a little bit old and need a refurb but the super friendly hotel staff, the amazing breakfast and great location really make up for that.
