Touring Europe with Eurail
Eurail is your passport for exploring pretty much the whole continent of Europe, so deciding where to go can be a tough call. Don't feel like you have to travel ever day, never stopping in one place long enough to see anything. How far and fast you want to go is up to you, and you don't need to be on the move the whole time to get the maximum value of the pass.

Here are a few of our favorite routes - plus we've added in suggested sightseeing to show you just how easy and fun it is to take a rail vacation in Europe.

    DAY   ITINERARY
  01-02   Rome
Enjoy a feast for the senses with this 8-day rail journey through Italy. Arrive into Rome at any time and check out the crowds on the Spanish Steps or enjoy a gelato by the Trevi Fountain. On Day 2, we've included a half-day 'Ancient and Old Rome' sightseeing tour, led by an expert guide who'll introduce the Colosseum, the Pantheon and other sights.
           
  03-04   Rome / Florence
Activate your Eurail pass at the station in Rome, and make your first train journey up to elegant Florence, where you have a couple of days to visit its Renaissance architecture and the artistic masterpieces on display at the Uffizi Gallery and countless other locations.
           
  05   Florence / Milan
Ride the rails again today for the short trip up to Milan, Italy's glamorous capital of fashion and style. Some of the streets and shopping arcades, which are lined with designer boutiques, feel more like catwalks! Perhaps take in an operatic performance at the worldfamous La Scala?
           
  06-08   Milan / Venice
Hop back on the train this morning down to Venice, the beautiful 'Floating City', best experienced on a gondola ride along its narrow canals. See the sights including St. Mark's Square and the Bridge of Sighs, and then on Day 7 enjoy a half-day excursion to the Lagoon Islands of Tercello, brightly-painted Burano, and Murano, which is famous for its glass-blowing. Tour comes to an end on Day 8.

  04-05   Cologne / Munich
Head into Bavaria for two nights in historic Munich, famous for its raucous beer cellars. We've included a day trip to the Royal Castles of Linderhof and the fairytale fantasy of Neuschwanstein.
           
  06-07   Munich / Vienna
Head to the Austrian capital today, and spend your days exploring the culture and the magnificent palaces of the former Habsburg Emperors.
           
  08   Vienna / Florence
Head into Italy today for a quick visit to Florence, whose medieval builders and craftsmen have left a legacy of astonishing architecture.
           
  09-11   Florence / Rome
Catch the train through the Tuscan countryside south to Rome, where you have a couple of days to explore the ruins of the Holy Roman Empire – highlights include the Colosseum and the Vatican. We've included a 'Rome by Night' tour, so you can end your trip in style.

  01-02   Berlin
Make your own way to Berlin, the vibrant German capital, and head out to explore the city's many historic sights including the Reichstag, Brandenburg Gate and the remaining sections of the Berlin Wall. On Day 2, take a full-day tour to visit Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp.
           
  03-04   Berlin / Hamburg
Activate your Eurail pass in advance of your first day of travel from Berlin to Hamburg. This happening city is home to one of the world's biggest ports, and has a great connection with The Beatles, who honed their sound here prior to making it big. Take in sights including the massive 647-room Baroque-style Town Hall, and the seven-storey redbrick warehouses that line the old port district.
           
  05-06   Hamburg / Munich
Take a scenic train ride, south through the heartlands of Germany to the Bavarian capital of Munich, famous for its historic architecture and lively beer cellars. On Day 6, we've included a day trip to visit Neuschwanstein Castle, whose fairytale appearance inspired a certain Mr. Disney to create his 'Cinderella Castle'.
           
  07-08   Munich / Prague
Back on the rails for the short journey into the Czech capital, Prague. On a day tour of Prague, you'll see the National Museum, Prague Castle and St. Vitus' Cathedral.
           
  09-10   Prague / Dresden
Back into Germany for a couple of nights in Dresden. Badly damaged during World War II, its citizens decided that reconstruction was the best way forward, and the city looks as gorgeous as it ever did.
           
  11   Dresden / Berlin
One last train ride today back to Berlin, where the tour concludes.

  01-03   Brussels
Arrive into Brussels, the multi-lingual capital of Belgium and indeed the political heart of Europe, and head straight for the Grand Place, the city's magnificent 15th Century market square. On Day 3, why not start using your Eurail Select Pass, and take a day trip by train to one of Belgium's other medieval gems - Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp are all less than an hour's ride away.
           
  04-05   Brussels / Amsterdam
Head across the border to vibrant Amsterdam. We've included a walking tour of the city's infamous Red Light District where you can learn about the 'oldest profession'.
           
  06-07   Amsterdam / Hamburg
Travel for a two-night stay in Hamburg, which boasts countless canals, lakes and rivers. With all this water, this former Hanseatic trading outpost has grown to become one of the world's busiest shipping ports.
           
  08-09   Hamburg / Copenhagen
Head into Denmark for your first taste of Scandinavia. The train hops across bridges and tunnels as it makes its way over to Copenhagen. The Danish capital is a waterfront jewel, with pastel-coloured houses, the Amalienborg Royal Palace and the Carlsberg Brewery. See some of the sights on an included hop-on, hop-off city sightseeing pass.
           
  10-11   Copenhagen / Stockholm
Cross the feat of modern engineering that is the Oresunds Link to Malmö and head past the lakes and forests of Sweden to Stockholm. The capital city is built on no fewer than 14 islands, notably Gamla Stan which houses the colourful old quarter. Stockholm is also known as the 'Summer Night City', and on those warm evenings where the sun barely dips below the horizon.
