Situated near Cape Algulhas, the southernmost tip of Africa, Gansbaai hosts an extraordinary marine environment. Known as the Great White shark capital of the world, the area provides daily sightings of these magnificent creatures. Shark populations worldwide are increasingly threatened and there is still a lot of research that is needed to understand and interpret the behaviour of these awesome predators. The knowledge and skills acquired by participating in this project are unparalleled. Most of your time at sea will be spent aboard a shark cage diving vessel as a crew member, helping out with the shark cage diving operations, shark observation and collecting data. There will be the opportunity to take the plunge and cage dive yourself. And don't be surprised to also spot whales, dolphins, seals, penguins and the huge array of birdlife around world-famous Dyer Island. Back on land, you may attend lectures on shark tagging and tracking, basic seamanship and shark biology and behaviour. The get the most out of your experience and have more time to cage diving (also depending on weather conditions), consider staying longer; anywhere from 2 to 12 weeks.

A day in the life of a volunteer

You will have the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of working for an eco-tourism boat and the rare chance to work with the Great White Shark and other Marine Wildlife. Our partner does specialize in the "Marine Big 5" experience, where they hope to find whales, dolphins, seals, sharks, and African penguins on each trip. Not to mention their incredible seabird sightings (albatross, petrels, skuas, etc) and breath-taking unspoiled scenery ! The main objective is to ensure you receive adequate sea going time during your stay. You will have the opportunity to shark cage dive but will be expected to assist guests during their trip and duties will be assigned to you while on board. You will ensure that every guest gains a once in a lifetime experience and be able to share your knowledge as a host. Those who show a good work ethic and those who are studying in a related field will have the opportunity to go on research expeditions and assist our marine biologists in data collection and shark tracking amongst other experiences such as environmental surveys (when time, weather and schedules allow. PLEASE NOTE: This is not guaranteed and not open to persons staying 2 weeks and less). Our partner is involved in other projects such as: penguin nests which sometimes need placement at the colonies; shark egg collection; bird surveys; animal rescues. Penguin colonies are sensitive and it is not possible to always be involved in a rescue attempt but if possible they will do so. You can expect lectures by our marine biologists and expert crew on: - Shark biology and behaviour - Basic seamanship and Safety at sea - Shark tagging and tracking - Marine conservation and Conservation Projects - Data collection You can take time off when you need. The boat operates 7 days a week, weather depending but they do not expect volunteers to work these hours, so taking the day off is easy. You will be able to explore the amazing area you are staying at or just chill out at the pool at your Volunteer House accommodation!
