Shamwari Conservation Experience offers a once in a lifetime chance to get behind the scenes and involved with the conservation efforts of Shamwari Game Reserve. Working alongside the award winning conservation team assisting them with long term projects such as game monitoring, working on the C.A.R.E community project, assisting at the Born Free big cat sanctuary, looking after orphaned animals at the wildlife rehabilitation centre and much more! Volunteers may have the opportunity to attend informative presentations from the experts on topics such as anti-poaching, game ranging and wildlife tracking, helping volunteers to have a more in-depth understanding into how conservation efforts are put in place. This 25,000 hectare, malaria free game reserve offers the largest concentration of wildlife in the Eastern and Southern Cape with a dedicated Wildlife Department, boasting a breeding and rehabilitation centre, animal hospital and anti-poaching unit. Come and partake in one of the largest private conservation initiatives in South Africa and take away the most memorable experience of your life!
Conservation volunteers are accommodated at Pote`s Lodge situated in the Southern area of Shamwari Game Reserve which is located two minutes from Shamwari`s wildlife centre. Accommodation is based in a predator free section of the reserve and has facilities such as BBQ area and swimming pool! Spacious twin bedded (2 single beds) rooms have private en-suite toilet, shower and basin facility, build-in cupboard and shared safe. Facilities include a canteen, telephone, internet access, communal fridge and a TV lounge/chill out area to hang out with fellow volunteers and play cards, have a few drinks and discuss the amazing projects you have been involved in! Note that R50 deposit will be requested on arrival for laundry bag, room key and general responsibility for facility and equipment.

Transfers can be requested at an additional charge. Nearest town to the Game Reserve is Port Elizabeth, just 1 hour drive away.
The working week at Shamwari Reserve is Monday to Friday, approximately between 08:00 and 17:00 (some days may start as early as 05:00). Conservation volunteers will have the chance to assist with many on-going short and long term projects However, as placements are relatively short there is no guarantee that you will be involved in all projects during your placement. The kind of projects volunteers may be able to assist with, include: - Game monitoring - C.A.R.E community project - General Shamwari reserve maintenance including fence, wire and bush clearing, road maintenance and game counts - Wilderness experience (camping out under the stars!) - Help and observe at the Born Free Big Cats Sanctuary - Working at an animal hospital and rehabilitation area assisting with tasks such as preparing food and feeding animals, cleaning cages, veterinary care and babysitting young animal orphans after rescue. Spare Time: Evenings and weekends are spent at leisure. During the evenings conservation volunteers can organise board games and other activities or relax with a drink at Sandlflats pub in the local town of Paterson! During weekends you can explore some of the surrounding attractions including Storms River Bungee jump or surfing at Jeffreys Bay. The program generally runs from Monday to Friday and weekends are at leisure. This opportunity can be used to explore the Eastern Cape and surrounding biodiversity. From time to time operational requirements might ask of volunteers to conduct weekend duties. These duties may vary by nature.
