Arrive in Dubai at any time on day 1. There are no included activities today. You will receive a welcome letter outlining what time to meet tomorrow morning as we set off on our Liwa Oasis adventure. In the meantime enjoy glittering Dubai.
This morning we enjoy a Dubai city tour. A modern city that provides a new setting at every turn, Dubai mixes the old and the new, the flashy with the traditional. We visit the spice market, fish, fruit and vegetable market and the gold souk. From here we head to the Bastakia area to view the traditional wind towers and the old Fahidi Fort which is today the Dubai History Museum. We will also see the Jumeirah Mosque, an architectural landmark in Dubai and stop beside Burj Al Arab for a photo opportunity. In the afternoon, we set off in 4 wheel drives to the Desert near Abu Dhabi, the exhilarating drive over the highest sand dunes in the world is simply a unique and most spectacular experience you will ever encounter. Our journey will take us towards Abu Dhabi, we will enjoy a fun dune drive before setting heading to the camp. This evening we enjoy a mouth-watering BBQ and a belly dancing show. Enjoy the emptiness of the desert and watch the night sky decorated by millions of stars! Travel time from Dubai to Abu Dhabi : approximately 2 hours
We cross the border from Dubai to Oman this morning and after the immigration and custom formalities at both the borders, change of vehicles and enjoy a scenic drive through the inland of the Sultanate of Oman while heading towards the city of Nizwa. Our first visit of the day is possibly the most impressing fortress in Oman; the fortress of Jabreen. We continue to Bahla Fort for a photo stop, before proceedng to Nizwa and visit the 17th century Nizwa fort and the bustling local souk famous for the artistic crafting of the silver and copper handicrafts. Travel time from Liwa to Nizwa: approximately 4 - 4.5 hours
Today we start our exploration of Nizwa area with a photo stop at the spectacular Wadi Ghul canyon, before heading down to a fascinating local village surrounded by dramatic mountain ranges. We continue on a mountain track toward Jebal Shams, one of the highest peaks in the region also known as ‘the Mountain of the Sun’. The road, twisting and curving around the contours, rises over 2000 meters! The uniqueness of this place is visible in the incredible views of the mountains and rugged landscape. On our return trip we visit the old village of Al Hamra, which is noted for its extraordinary ancient mud houses. We will visit one of oldest houses, that of Sheikh “Bait Al Safa”, which has been restored and decorated and transform into a lively museum. We travel onwards to Jebel Shams where we will overnight. This morning we continue to Sur, a sea-faring town and a trading port bustling with activity throughout the year which is famed for the fascinating architecture of its old town and its shipyards where traditional dhows have been built for centuries. After a quick tour of Sur, we travel on the coastal road passing high cliffs and small fishing villages. Visit the ancient city of Qalhat, the oldest settlement in Oman, which was believed to have be destroyed by a huge earthquake. Today only remnants of the city walls remain, giving an impression of how the old town must have been. We visit the famous Sinkhole, a part of a collapsed mountain which filled with sea water before continuing on the graded road via Fins, where we may choose to stop and enjoy a swim. We arrive in Muscat in the late afternoon where we will spend this evening. Travel time from Jebel Shams to Muscat: approximately 6 - 7 hours
Get up early for a guided tour of Muscat. Our first stop is the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque - a remarkable contemporary architectural achievement. Afterwards, we explore the Bait Baranda museum, which showcase the history of Muscat. Visit Old Muscat, surrounded by steep mountains and flanked by twin 16thcentury forts ‘Jalali’ & ‘Mirani’, also see the home of His Majesty the Sultan, the Al Alam Palace. We proceed to Bait Al Zubair Museum which includes traditional Omani weaponry, jewellery, costumes, domestic utensils and recreated urban and rural environments. We then drive through the scenic beauty of the corniche, stopping at Muttrah - the main port & commercial centre, and explore the colorful historic souk. This is a real souk with winding alleys and backstreets and stalls selling all manner of textiles, jewelry, traditional Omani perfumes (bukhoor - made of frankincense), souvenirs and antiques. After the tour and lunch, we proceed to Dubai where you will be dropped at the Starting Point hotel. Muscat to Dubai - 400kms, approximately 4 – 4.5 driving hours Please do not book departure flights before 8pm this evening. We are able to organise accommodation for this evening.
