Teaching English in Central Vietnam (STA exclusive)
Day 1 - Hue/Dong Ha (L,D)
Private Transfer from Hue Airport to Dong Ha Township (approx. 1.5 hrs). Settle into your Hotel then lunch and orientation with project staff. Afternoon visit to Trung Vuong Dao Primary School and Le Quy Don Secondary School. Dinner with local friends from the English Club. Dong Ha, the Capital of Quang Tri Province, was the northernmost town of the Former South Vietnamese Republic during the 2nd Indochina War. Located just South of the 17th Parallel this area saw heavy fighting during the 1960's and 1970's and the scars remain to this day. Redevelopment of this region is now taking place. Visitors are welcomed and will experience true Vietnamese hospitality.
Days 2-5 Dong Ha (4B,4L,4D)
After breakfast at your hotel, ride your bicycle an easy 20 minutes to the Primary School. Spend the mornings teaching to Children Grades 1-6 and the afternoons at the secondary school with the older Children Grades 10-12. Enjoy your lunch with the children and local staff at the school cafeteria which serves a wide variety of healthy local Vietnamese cuisine. Trung Vuong Primary School is in a state of development and teaches in addition to the standard curriculum, computers, music, art and sports. Le Quy Don Secondary school is more established being founded in 1994. They have 600 students in 21 classes, with about 25 to 35 in each. Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Informatics, Literature and English are taught. During the day you will be teaching in English on such things as; General Knowledge, Cultural Diversity and culture of English speaking countries, with the goals of improving pronunciation, intonation, speaking natural English, teamwork, public speaking, conversation, debating, expressing oneself, raising the effectiveness of reading and social skills. Volunteers with particular expertise in teaching methodology are especially helpful in improving the teaching skills for the local school teachers. You may also be participating in extra-curricula activities; special events with the students on the holidays such as Christmas day or Tet (Vietnamese New Year), play sports (football, basket ball, volleyball), go on picnics or plant trees with the students. In the evenings you may get invitations to dine with the families of local teachers and experience the warmth of true Vietnamese hospitality.
Day 6 Dong Ha/Hue (B,L)
Travel by car to visit the former DMZ, Ho Chi Minh Trail, Vinh Moc Tunnels, Le Mon Kindergarten and the Vinh Linh Blind Association. Farewell lunch with project staff and teachers then private transfer to your Hotel in the Hue. Free afternoon to explore the Citadel and Tombs of the Emperors in this former Capital of Vietnam or just relax. The Nguyen Dynasty ruled Vietnam from Hue for 143 years until 1945 when the last Nguyen Emperor, Bao Dai abdicated. Their seat of power, The Forbidden City or Citadel, modeled on the Chinese Forbidden City in Beijing still remains and can be explored along with the numerous impressive Tombs of the Nguyen Lords which dot the countryside along the banks of the Perfume River.
Day 7 - Hue (B)
Check out of your hotel by 12pm. Your private Transfer will return you to Hue Airport.
