Summary
This well-planned package is divided into an initial, intriguing orientation course about the wonders of Chinese culture, then volunteers will be introduced into Chinese school life where the real learning begins! The first five days (Mon-Fri) of this exciting project will be spent in Shanghai on an orientation course. Try out your calligraphy talents in your lessons of the ancient Mandarin language, revel in the rich information about local Chinese culture and enjoy numerous outings designed to give you a colourful snapshot of stunning Shanghai! During the orientation course the field team will help you to arrange your onward travel to your allocated placement school. Once arrived, your school organiser will greet you and take you to your project accommodation. In the first few days of starting the teaching project the Head of English for your school will give you an introduction about the standard teaching method and the level of English you can expect from your students. During those days you will also be given the chance to observe the others teachers' lessons to give you a feel for the Chinese style. The local teachers will help you to plan your lessons and also to complete the post reports. During your exciting life as a teacher, daily lessons usually commence at 8am with four periods in the morning before a well-deserved, long lunch break. Afternoons begin again at 2pm with 2-3 periods before the day ends. Volunteers will be teaching 15 - 20 lessons per week. Primary school lessons last 40 minutes each but in Middle school, teaching consists of 2-4 lessons a day - each lasting 40-45 minutes. Class size is usually large with up to 70 students per class. But don't balk at this! It's a great opportunity to get fantastic group work going, and you will be joined by a teaching assistant to help you manage the students. Volunteers play plenty of games with the classes such as Chinese Whispers, Hangman, Tic-Tac-Toe (Noughts and Crosses), Guess Who I Am and many others. The younger students also enjoy western nursery rhymes. In some schools you will be given a topic for each week such as the weather, animals or festivals. Teaching materials such as pictures, songs and games need to be organised before-hand, and a wealth of inspiration can often be found on the internet. The lessons provided by this project are all aimed to improve the students' spoken English and help them to understand western culture. This is your chance to get creative and have good, wholesome, education fun with the children! The facilities available will be different for each school; in some schools there is a bare minimum with no computers or projectors available. Some schools have access to computers, so slide shows and photos can make the lessons interesting.
