Fiji Island Expedition (2013)
Calling all hands on volunteers! If you are one of those amazing people selfless enough to give your time to help people in need, this Fiji Expedition project offers a diverse range of activities sure to keep you on your toes and help to make a real difference. The villages of the Yasawa Islands, although stunning, have only a few sources of income. Tourism has benefited a number of villages in the island chain, but many others still have no steady income and basically live off what they can grow and catch. The Yasawa villages have been identified as being in need of assistance with water supply systems, sustainable power solutions, and resource management education. Many villages do not have access to a constant supply of fresh water, rely on diesel generation for power, lack a sustainable source of income, and would benefit from further education in resource management. So that`s where you come in! Volunteers will live and work in a wonderful beach location and travel to indigenous communities to help improve the infrastructure that supports village life. Volunteers will assess the specific needs of each village, evaluating potential development solutions such as improving water security, implementing sustainable power, kindergarten and primary school support and providing environmental education. This exciting program, created in partnership with the Yasawa Trust Foundation, will enable volunteers to have an important role in the development of sustainable infrastructure across 27 villages. Volunteers will become immersed in Fijian culture and have the option to snorkel, dive and explore other island chains during their free time on the weekends.
