Kia Ora! Looking for a MAD adventure?! Making a Difference (MAD) is a super fun and unique opportunity to be a special part of a community, cultural, and conservation program based in beautiful Rotorua - the heart of Maori culture in New Zealand!
  • Summary

    This week-long volunteer package is ideal for those who want to do something really memorable and worthwhile on their holidays. You`ll spend four days at the remote Whakawerawera Village where you`ll work closely with the locals towards cultural, social and environmental preservation. It`s a great opportunity to not only help out but to get in touch with another culture off the beaten tourist track! On a hearty, complimentary brekkie-filled stomach, each day will be something a little new and different with plenty of chances to soak up the fantastic surroundings and cultural riches of New Zealand`s indigenous societies!

  • Accommodation

    2 nights will be spent in 6-bedded mixed dorm accommodation at Nomads Auckland, known as the fun and most funky destination for young backpackers in NZ! Lodging includes breakfast. 5 nights will be spent in 4 to 6-bedded mixed dormitory accommodation at Crash Palace in Rotorua. Lodging here also includes complimentary breakfast. Both accommodations include shared bathroom facilities and cool outdoor pool areas perfect for afternoon cool-downs and impromptu gatherings with your fellow travel-mates! IMPORTANT - Accommodation will be automatically provided in Auckland on nights 1 and 7 and Rotorua on nights 2 to 6 unless the agent advises the supplier otherwise at the point of booking. However the 2 nights accommodation in Auckland can be used at any point during these 7 days so it could be used at the end of your volunteer project.

  • Day 1

    Please note this is a sample itinerary - Accommodation in Auckland can be used at any point over the 7 nights. Clients make their own way to Nomads Backpackers in Auckland city. Depending on when you arrive, there`s plenty of things to see and do in Auckland as you acquaint yourself with this contemporary, waterfront city!

  • Day 2

    After a tasty breakfast, board the tour bus to Rotorua! Once the tour has arrived at Kiwi Paka Backpackers the rest of the day is yours either for a spot of roaming or some relaxation!

  • Day 3

    Today is day one of what you`ve been waiting for... the volunteer program! After a bus transfer to Whakawerawera village for a brief introduction and tour of the area, you`ll begin your conservation volunteer work, cooperating closely with the locals - but all this not before a cultural performance to get you in the spirit! Volunteer work duration is approximately 4 hour per day. Please note the volunteering part of this package starts every Tuesday.

  • Day 4

    By now you`re well acquainted with your duties, so after a wholesome breakfast, head back to the village to continue what you started the day before!

  • Day 5

    Up and at `em again today with an action-packed day of hand-on activities, chatting and cooperating with locals and getting in touch with some real-life kiwi culture!

  • Day 6

    Today is the final day of the volunteer program. On a full and satisfied stomach it`s time to finish what you started with a bang! Make the most of your last day with new-found friends and skills.. and of course, the memories!

  • Day 7

    Today the tour departs Rotorua, with clients making their own way back to Auckland. Tonight is spent back at the Nomads Backpackers, with ample opportunity to sample the Auckland city night life whether it`s a tasty meal by the harbour or some funky disco dancing that you`re after.. there`s plenty on offer right here!

  • Day 8

    After another scrumptious breakfast meal, clients check-out of Nomads and continue with their onward journeys!

    - Airport transfers - Transfer between Auckland and Rotorua(approx 2 hours by bus, NZ$35)

  • Transfer Information

    If starting your trip in Auckland: Clients must make their own way to Nomads Hostel in Auckland on days one and eight of the tour (or whatever day they have requested). Getting between Auckland and Rotorua: The transfers between Auckland and Rotorua on day 2 and day 7 are not included in the tour package. This transfer takes approximately 2 hours by bus and can be arranged by Nomads Auckland for approximately NZ$35. This package also gives you the option to Self Drive and make your own way between Auckland and Rotorua. However you decide to get to Rotorua, make sure you organise it well in advance especially during peak season as transport can book up quickly. If starting your trip in Rotorua: Clients must make their own way to Kiwi Paka Backpackers in Rotorua on Monday night in order to start their volunteering on Tuesday morning. Transfers between the Rotorua hostel and volunteer program on days 3 to 6 are included in the package. Transfers between Auckland and Rotorua and vice versa are not included.
