Tour style - Learn & Volunteer

15 days

Do your bit for one of the world's natural wonders and help restore a stretch of Great Barrier Reef to its original glory on this incredible volunteer project. After a catamaran cruise from Mackay to Brampton Island, you'll set up camp on the beach there - your home for the next fortnight. You'll wake up to the ocean every morning - then spend your day protecting its coral, getting rid of rubbish and protecting native plants. In the evening, kick back at camp, go koala spotting, snorkel the reef or just get inspired by the sunset. The perfect reward for all that hard work!
  • Summary

Typical day: A typical day would include waking up for a 07:00 breakfast. Volunteers then meet in the common area at 08:00 for a team briefing where leaders outline the itinerary of the day and any activities that are planned. The morning work session could for example include removing invasive species for 2-3 hours, and in this case project leaders will spend time showing the volunteers the difference between native and invasive plants and explaining why the invasive plants are threatening the natural habitat and the effect this has on native animals of the island. Volunteers then have a break and lunch during the middle of the day while the sun is at its hottest. The afternoon session could be spent conducting surveys and health checks on the coral reef. Leaders take volunteers out on the coral reef at low tide and explain the intricacies of the animals and organisms living on the reef. Volunteers then set about using different data collection techniques to measure the amount and quality of the coral on the reef. Late afternoons and evenings are free for volunteers to swim, cook dinner, watch the sunset and enjoy the island. Typical week: Volunteers work Monday to Friday and days are usually split into afternoon and morning work sessions, although some days involve a hike to neighbouring beaches for collection of marine debris and rubbish. Evenings and weekends are free for volunteers to enjoy the island. Some of the work is quite taxing and volunteers need to be prepared to get their hands dirty! It's all worth it at the end of the day when you're watching the sun set over the Great Barrier Reef...
