Join Conservation Volunteers on an adventure along the beautiful West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. This project focuses on habitat restoration of coastal land adjacent to Paparoa National Park. Volunteers will help out with a variety of tasks in a stunning location- including tree planting, seed collection and removal of weeds to create an ecological corridor spanning the mountains to the sea. The forests bear nikau palms and rata trees that are hundreds of years old. This project will transform existing open pastures into dense native forest and enhance habitat for the only breeding site in the world for the Westland Black Petrel. Volunteers on the programme will receive a certificate of participation at completion of the tour. All Conservation Volunteers projects are led by a Conservation Volunteers Team Leader. The Team Leaders are a great source of knowledge and have particular interest in the environment. They are enthusiastic and experts in the practical conservation projects that operate. They also want all volunteers to enjoy the experience as well as helping the New Zealand environment.

  • Day 1

    Volunteers will be collected at the visitors centre at 12 noon to be brought to the volunteer accommodation base. After settling in to sleeping quarters, the rest of the day is free for exploring, socialising, or a spot of R&R.

  • Day 2

    The work begins! Enjoy an early breakfast and transfer to the animal sanctuary by 8am. Your day's work will be varied and you will experience a range of duties which may include planting, maintenance and caring for seedlings (indoor activity for bad weather). You will also enjoy close contact with experienced and knowledgeable workers in the field! A lunch break including meals will be provided, with the working day ending at approximately 4pm. In the afternoon, return to the volunteer base for dinner and leisure time for the remainder of the day.

  • Day 3

    Spend the morning at the sanctuary before a 12 noon pick-up to return back to the visitors centre in central Punakaika.

Perched on the edge of the Southern Alps, Punakaiki encompasses spectacular limestone landscapes, river gorges, caves, coastal and inland walks and the world renowned Pancake Rocks and blowholes. The coastline is the natural habitat of the Little Blue Penguin and the only nesting ground of the Westland Black Petrel.
