The Lycian Way is the longest trekking route in all of Turkey, covering nearly 500 kilometres from Fethiye to Antalya. This is widely regarded as one of the finest treks in the world, and today we set off for our first taste of this walk. We first take a dolmus from Fethiye to Faralya, where we will stay for the next few nights with great views down over Butterfly Valley. From here, we take our first walk along the coast, enjoying the fantastic views out over the coast and down to the crystal clear water. Overnight in Faralya. Estimated travel distance: 6km
Today we will walk from Faralya down to Butterfly Valley below. Butterfly Valley is so named a beautiful lagoon because of the large endemic population of butterflies that were originally found here. Our walk takes us through pine forest and over flower filled meadows, passing small villages and through fertile valleys. Along the route we will pass through olive groves, citrus trees and numerous beehives which flourish in the fertile land here. Once we reach Butterfly Valley, there is plenty of time here to enjoy the beach and soak up the sunshine in this beautiful location. Overnight in Faralya. Estimated travel distance: 12km
Start the day with a trek up to the village of Kayakoy, a walk of around 2.5 hours. This old Greek village became a virtual ghost town overnight when in 1923 the Turkish and Greek governments ordered an immediate population exchange. Now preserved as a museum village, it consists of hundreds of rundown but still mostly intact Greek-style houses and churches, which cover a small mountainside. We will take a lunch break here, a great chance to try gözleme, sometimes called "Turkish pancakes", where fresh pastry is rolled out, filled and sealed, then cooked over a hotplate. In the afternoon we walk for about another 2.5 hours along a path through the pine forest with stunning views, ending at the turquoise Oludeniz lagoon where you can enjoy a refreshing, well-earned swim. Overnight in Faralya Estimated travel time: 4-5hrs hiking
To continue walking today, we have to take a short ride by local dolmus further along the coast. But fear not, the views along this coastal road are equally spectacular as they are on foot. This is the best way for us to see the best of the Lycian Way. We are dropped off and our luggage continues on with the bus as we start our trek today. We continue our trekking today from Yesikoy where the main road joins up with the Lycian Way again. We follow the Esen River along the Lycian Way. Along the way we can see the ancient Roman aqueduct of Delikkemer, a real engineering feat that carried water all the way from the mountains down to the beach at Patara. Along the trail, where we might see some of Turkey's wild flowers in the right season, and as we pass Tavas village, more beehives, and even several tortoises along the way. By lunchtime we arrive at Patara. Once a great Roman town, with a temple of Apollo considered second only to that of Delphi, Patara retains impressive ruins. We have time this afternoon to explore these ruins or, if you prefer, relax at the delightful beach here. Then we meet our transfer and head for Kalkan. The town of Kalkan is one of the larger places we stop at along the route, with a wide selection of restaurants where you can enjoy some of the delicious seafood as we watch the sunset. Overnight in Kalkan Estimated travel distance: 12km
Today we follow the Lycian Way through some of the smaller villages inland that make up the trail. Our route will take us through olive groves and past shepherds huts before the trail flattens out and we walk through meadows and fields dotted with houses. We then transfer over to the idyllic Mediterranean fishing village of Kas. Overnight in Kas. Estimated travel distance: 15km
Today is free for you to relax after all those days walking. Kas is an activity centre, so you have a pick of activities available to you if you want to try something more active. One option would be to take a boat tour over the sunken ruins of the city of Kekova, or if you are feeling more active, you can try this by sea kayak. Overnight in Kas.
Depart Kas at anytime.
