Mega Highland Christmas
Day 1: 23 December Departs 8.45am. Leaving Edinburgh our route takes us past Stirling, home to legends such as William Wallace and Robert the Bruce and scene of many of Scotland’s most famous and bloody battles in the Wars of Independence. Further north we pass through dramatic Glencoe, the ‘Weeping Glen’ and site of the massacre of 1692, more recently used as a backdrop in the movie ‘Skyfall’. We pass under the shadow of Ben Nevis and enter the Great Glen arriving at Fort Augustus for the evening. Day 2: Christmas Eve We head west to the Isle of Skye past beautiful Eilean Donan Castle. We then spend the day exploring the beautiful island also known as the ‘winged isle’ or the ‘Isle of Mist’. With its ruined castles and awesome scenery, it’s immersed in Celtic myths and Viking legends. Back to the mainland and Inverness, capital of the Highlands for the start of the festivities. Day 3: Christmas Day Christmas Day will never be the same again. We take whatever the unpredictable Highland winter weather throws at us. White sandy beaches, snow-capped mountains or windswept moors, we'll take in the fresh sea air to fight off any remaining hangovers. We'll be sure to search out a suitable site for a clan battle of our very own…. with snowballs! A few snow-angel and snowman building attempts will set us up for the slap-up Christmas feast awaiting our return to the hotel. After turkey, tinsels and brussel sprouts galore (sprouts optional) you can grab a partner and work off some of your Christmas indulgencies with traditional Scottish Ceilidh dancing in ‘The Wallace Ballroom’ with its classic furnishings, antique portraits, works of art and glorious crystal chandeliers. A night fit for the Royals and one to make Christmas away from home something really special! Day 4: Boxing Day We head for the sweeping and eerie Culloden Moor, sight of the defeat of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s Jacobite uprising. Then into the remote Highland wilderness amongst the mountains, glens and rivers. There’ll be time for a hike before heading for a spot of monster-hunting! We’ll drive along the banks of Loch Ness passing Urquhart Castle as we make our way to our home for the night, back to the fantastic Morag’s Lodge in Fort Augustus. Grab your Tartan Toga, tonight it’s time to party! Day 5: 27 December We say farewell to Loch Ness and head cross country through the Cairngorms National Park and into the forests and rivers of Perthshire. We spend time at Dunkeld in Macbeth country with its mighty cathedral on the banks of the River Tay. We arrive back in Edinburgh approximately 5pm.
