Be a part of this amazing experience which is both a learning experience and a chance to see the stunning Nicaragua. Arrive at the Augusto C Sandino international airport in Managua, where you'll be picked up and transferred to the project. After sorting out all the necessary procedures, you'll be treated to a scrumptious welcome meal! The first few days will be dedicated to your one-on-one Spanish classes with a tutor, when you can pick up some words and phrases to use during your interaction with the local people, and to give you grounding before the work. Following this, your days start early, eating breakfast with your host family before catching the bus to the relevant project site, and arriving to start work at about 8am. You will then work with the family for whom you are funding and working on your chosen project until around midday when you will eat lunch. You'll be helping to build energy-efficient stoves alongside a local mason and the indigenous family, mixing cement and constructing the stove from start to finish, which will need to be completed within one week and aims to satisfy what the community leaders and families really want and need. After lunch you will continue to work until 4pm when you return to Estelí to your host family for a relaxing evening. In the community La Thompson, were GVI has sent up their first project, living conditions are very basic with approximately 160 families living in houses made out of scrap metal, wood, and plastic sheets. Families generally cook over open fires inside the houses, which gives the families' lung problems and burns, and increases the already huge deforestation in the area, and there is also a scarcity of latrines, leading to poor hygiene issues. Your help here on a daily basis will help these disadvantaged local communities and also improve the endangered ecosystems in the area. After a long and rewarding day of work, you¿ll have the chance to experience a half-day hike out to the Salto Estanzuela Waterfall and also a day hike out to the beautiful Miraflor, which will be arranged. In your free time, there's always something to do here and you can take this chance to explore Nicaragua! Go trekking and climbing around the Maribios Volcanic Chain, or perhaps try your hands at diving or snorkelling through the coral reefs of Corn Islands. Visit the Cloud Forests of the Reservas Natural Miraflor and Cerro Tisey-Estanzuela or discover one of the finest collections of museums and churches in León. There is also the option of touring the organic coffee farms of Ruta De Café and many more.
