7 days

Spend your days volunteering at a sea turtle project on Costa Rica's Pacific coast. In your free time enjoy all that Playa Matapalo has to offer including surf lessons, relaxing on the beach and enjoying legendary sunsets. About this Project: The Pacific Sea Turtle Project is a conservation initiative undertaken to protect endangered sea turtles and their nests, and improve the chance for survival of hatchlings on Matapalo Beach. Using man-made turtle hatcheries (called 'viveros') to protect turtle eggs and joining in vigilant beach patrols, volunteers provide vital resources and support. How you can make a difference: Volunteering in this small town on this turtle conservation project means you are helping to keep a vital turtle protection program going - these programs need volunteers because they are not funded by their governments and do not have enough funding to hire enough staff. Additionally you are supporting the local community's small businesses such as surf instructors, horseback riding rentals, even the convenience store, thereby contributing to the local economy. A day in the life of a volunteer: •Discover how sea turtle conservation programs around the world work to protect these fascinating and endangered creatures •Participate in night patrols along the beach to ensure the safety of turtles and their nests •Collect data and work to maintain the area •Depending on the season, monitor baby turtle hatcheries, count turtles and release them into the ocean •Visit nearby Manuel Antonio National Park on a free weekend •Enjoy warm Pacific beaches and incredible sunsets—right out front of your shared volunteer dorm.
