Guatemala Building Project

Experience the beautiful and intriguing Mayan culture first-hand with this self-rewarding volunteer project, which is unique and perfect for those travellers who cant stay out for long periods. Choose from a 1, 2, 3 or 4-week project, working on community construction projects near Antigua, Guatemala in Central America and helping to improve the lives of the indigenous families. Within as little as a week, you can change the lives of several indigenous Maya communities in rural Guatemala, by helping to build something as simple as energy-efficient stoves for cleaner air and less wood consumption. The indigenous Mayan communities in Guatemala make up a huge percentage of the population, and yet many live off just $1 a day, meaning that they are enduring extreme poverty. This project is committed to helping these families and the main aim here is to help the families become self-sustainable and even start micro-businesses to increase their family income - and you can be a big part of that! You may be working with two indigenous communities in Guatemala - the San Andrés Itzapa and the Santa Maria de Jesus - both living within a 45 minute bus ride from Antigua, through lush mountain scenery and typical Guatemalan villages. Building these stoves will drastically reduce the chances of issues such as pneumonia, serious burns, eye infections, blindness and other health risks including death in women and children, to name a few. Apart from helping the local community, you'll also get the chance to explore the beauty of Guatemala. Experience being in the stunning city of Antigua in Guatemala, which is a hidden gem of Central America, packed with ancient ruins, active volcanoes and intriguing Mayan culture. All work and no play makes for no fun, so in your spare time, enjoy an exciting half-day guided adventure activity which you get to pick! Choose from some engaging rock climbing on some of Guatemala's best rock climbing cliffs, some active mountain biking or perhaps get your limbs in action with some hiking in the surrounding areas around Antigua! You'll be lead by a professional guide, who will make your experience more memorable with the bets local tips! Additionally, while in Central America, what better place to learn or brush up on your Spanish? You'll be given 10 hours of one-on-one Spanish classes with a tutor and you're sure to leave with at least the basics of this beautiful language!
