Prepare for an unforgettable experience that will be a learning experience, see you enjoying yourself and also have you helping others. Arrive at the Aurora International Airport in Guatemala on Saturday, where you'll be picked up and transferred to the project. After sorting out all the necessary procedures, you'll be taken to your host family home, where you'll can settle in and have a good night's rest, ready for your experience! The first two days will be dedicated to your one-on-one Spanish classes with a tutor, when you can pick up some words and phrases to use during your interaction with the local people. Following this, your days will start early with eating a scrumptious breakfast with your host family, before travelling by a shuttle bus to your relevant project site and arriving to start work at around 8am. Here, you will then work with the family for whom you are funding and working on your project until late afternoon. You'll be helping to build energy-efficient stoves alongside a local mason and the indigenous family, mixing cement and constructing the stove from start to finish. Lunch will be eaten in the communities with a local family during the week. During the project, volunteers will work with their chosen individual project until it is finished, which will be within one week. Each project / task is designed to be started and finished within one week, and aims to satisfy what the community leaders and families really want and need. In this way, all the projects have been approved by members of the communities and confront the problems they face. Economic stove building is important because almost all indigenous families use wood-burning stoves to cook, which lead to several health risks and in some cases death. With your funding and work, GVI is able to build one stove for one family within a week, and you will be funding all the materials and local masonry work. During your project, you'll also enjoy a half-day guided adventure activity such as rock climbing, mountain biking or hiking in the surrounding areas around Antigua, along with a professional guide. If biking isn't your thing and you prefer the heights, you will be guided on some of Guatemala's best rock climbing cliffs.
