Spend a half day learning Spanish and half day volunteering at various projects in Granada. A perfect combination of learning and giving in this beautiful colonial city. About this Project: The Spanish Language School assists students in quickly and efficiently establishing a firm foundation in Spanish. Family homestays will help you to communicate effectively and introduce you to Nicaraguan social and cultural life. Your time spent volunteering at a pre-school, after-school program or on an eco-lodge will enable you to give back to this friendly country. A day in the life of a volunteer: •Spend half days learning Spanish with the balance of the day volunteering •Based on your interests, participate in an after-school program teaching painting, jewelry-making and English or working on a recycling project; assist in the day-to-day care of 2–4 year-olds at a daycare centre or help with sustainable farming practices at a cooperative family eco-lodge •In your free time explore the colonial city of Granada, kayak through the many isletas in Lake Nicaragua, or visit the craft market and volcano in nearby Masaya

  • Day 1 Granada

    Transfer from the Managua airport to your accommodation at the Spanish school in Granada. Nicaragua has flourished in the past few years and boasts both incredibly friendly people as well as impressive natural beauty. Granada’s colonial charm is complimented by the surrounding active volcanoes and lakes, making day trips a fun and easy option. Hike, cruise, or just explore the city’s markets and museums. Walking is probably the easiest way to see all the sights of Granada. Granada is Nicaragua’s third largest and oldest city and retains its traditional Spanish colonial character. It´s sometimes called ¨The Great Sultana¨ because of it´s beautiful colonial architecture. In the warm evenings you can usually find friendly neighbors visiting and chatting with each other from rocking chairs in the open front room of their homes. You´ll walk along cobblestone streets and see brightly painted buildings. Frequently live local music is played in the square, and good nightlife is easy to find. Granada is located on the shores of Lake Nicaragua and has a long park ideal for strolling. For a relaxing afternoon, you can spend a couple of hours in a boat touring some of the 350+ ¨Isletas¨ or little islands by found nearby Granada in Lake Nicaragua. Other optional activities include visiting the nearby extinct volcano Mombacho, now shrouded in vegetation, or Masaya Volcano National Park, which is home to an active volcano. The nearby markets of Masaya house vendors selling great Nicaraguan handicrafts such as hammocks, pottery, and paintings.

  • Days 2-6 Granada (6B,5L,6D)

    Spend half your day learning Spanish and the other half volunteering at one of various projects available in Granada. Some of these are, helping out with 2-4 year olds at the day-care centre, helping with maintenance and sustainable farming practices at an eco-lodge just out of town, or assisting at an after-school program with painting, jewellery making, English lessons, helping with homework or on a recycling project. Granada is a fun place to be, as the local people are charming, funny and welcome visitors with open arms. This Spanish language school assists students in quickly and efficiently establishing a firm foundation in Spanish. Staying with a family (sharing a dorm room with other students) will help you communicate effectively and introduce you to Nicaraguan social and cultural life. Your time spent volunteering on the projects will enable to you to give back to this special place.

  • Day 7 Granada

    Depart at any time. Add on extra weeks if desired, with no maximum length of volunteering.
