North Africa

Travel guide

The Mediterranean is seductive, and North Africa shares some of this - a Saharan desert fringed by beautiful coastline. From the bustling and picturesque medinas and souks, the intricately designed (and Insta-worthy) doors lining the streets, and the intoxicating medieval feel of Morocco, to the tombs, temples and pyramids of ancient Egypt. Look further and you'll find white-sand beaches in Tunisia, or head off-the-beaten-track to discover the impressive historical sites, charismatic cities, and desert plains of Algeria.

When is the best time to visit North Africa?

North Africa is a year-round destination. The best time of year to visit, where it's not too crowded with tourists but also not uncomfortably hot would be the shoulder season, between April-May or September-October. The desert gets really cold in the winter months, however, if you visit the countries closer to the coastline through November-March you'll still find warm Mediterranean weather.

Morocco
Full of warmth, charm and an old-world feel, Morocco is a mesmerising and unforgettable country at the tip of North Africa. Every city is a different experience - from the medieval vibes of Fes to the coastal feel of Tangier, the hustle and bustle of Marrakech to the hidden gems like Chefchaouen. Morocco will pull you in with it's beauty and make you want to stay for its culture.

Egypt
You could be forgiven for thinking that Egypt is just all tombs, temples and pyramids, but it's so much more than that. Not only do you have the magnificent pyramids of Giza (and it's giant sphinx) and the grand Luxor - you've also got the River Nile, the bustling local markets, the neverending desert landscape, and the beautiful coast along the Red Sea, which is home to some unbelievable diving and snorkelling sites.

Flights to North Africa

Unfortunately you can't hop on a magical carpet and fly to the mysterious world of the Sultans, but you can hop on a flight from the US to Marrakech, and it can take as long as 18 hours to get there. If you're fancying a trip to Egypt, that takes around 11 hours. Remember, with STA Travel you can put a deposit on your flight & we have exclusive student/youth fares.
