East Africa

Travel guide

Trekking up to the peak of Mt Kilimanjaro, off-roading through the wilderness of the Serengeti, watching a sunset over the paradise island of Zanzibar - East Africa is a playground for the curious traveler. Spend your days spotting the Big 5 in the Masai Mara, staring at awe of the dramatic landscapes, and immersing yourself in the charming culture of the region. Once you visit, this magical corner of the world will always have a place in your heart.

When is the best time to visit East Africa?

You're not likely to be disappointed if you aim to visit most of the East African countries between June and October, as this is the main dry season (which coincides perfectly with a summer vacation). But if you'd rather beat the crowds and go at the beginning of the year, then the best places to visit in January or February are Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa and Tanzania as this is when the wildlife congregate around watering holes - so you'll definitely get to spot some of the Big 5. Take some warmer clothes though, as it can get pretty chilly at night time.

Our favorite countries to visit in East Africa

Nature is calling, from the vast wilderness of the Serengeti National Park to the hikers' bucketlist destination, Mt Kilimanjaro. It's all about getting outdoors and simple living - watching wild animals roam, or challenging yourself with some outdoor activities. If you're feeling like a bit of chill time and relaxation then Tanzania delivers that too, with the promise of paradise-like tropical islands offshore, a marine park, and the perfect spots for sunset viewing.
A country that will make you feel like you've been dropped in the middle of a real life version of The Lion King, with its vast savannahs, and incredible wildlife (where are you Mufasah?!) right into the depths of the Masai Mara National Reserve, where you can find Amboseli elphants, flamingos, wildebeest and loads more. Kenya even offers a tropical coastline and lush forests, so without even visiting you can picture how unbelievably diverse the experiences are in this country.
Zimbabwe may have an emotional back story, but it's home to seriously friendly locals and epic adventures around every corner. Visit for Matobo National Park and spot the Big 5, before 'ooing' and 'ahhing' at the natural wonder that is Victoria Falls and rafting in the incredible Zambezi River. Like much of Eastern Africa it is a country with contrasting dramatic landscapes, charming local villages and thrilling experiences.
Experience the sheer force of the thunderous Victoria Falls in Zambia (it borders Zimbabwe). If that isn't quite enough adventure for you for one day, you can bungee jump or bridge swing from the Victoria Falls bridge over the Zambezi river, take a helicopter ride over the Falls and Batoko Gorge, or camp under the stars in the wilderness of one of the game reserves - huddle around a campfire, wander deep into the bush, and get up close and personal with the wildlife. Or do all of it and have the trip of a lifetime!
